The host of One By Willie is an author and award-winning journalist. John is a senior editor at Texas Monthly. The journalist won two Texas Institute of Letters Awards for his political reporting. In the 2010s, he changed his writing focus to pop culture. He produced an entire Texas Monthly issue on outlaw country music in 2012. In effect, he created an oral history of the genre. In 2020, John led the "All 151 Willie Nelson Albums, Ranked" project. His next project was an issue called "Willie: Now, More Than Ever." The issue explored and analyzed the musician's history, legacy, and work.
